boom brockalocka: Your Feedback Matters – Update on Xbox One
Don Mattrick, President of the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft, has made a blog post with an update on Xbox One.
Here is an excerpt from his post:
…today I am announcing the following changes to Xbox One and how you can play, share, lend, and resell…
I kind of hate this. Now I can’t share my games via an uploaded game library. This also does nothing to move console gaming towards a steam like system.
You can still buy entirely digital copies of games, but the majority of gamers have spoken. They want discs and they want to be able to trade those discs. If this gets more people to adopt the platform, then that’s a win for Microsoft. My biggest issue was the 24 hour check in. That has been discarded.
Why would I want to buy digital copies at full price? I know that’s what they’re doing now, but with things more steam like, that means disks would eventually be out the window and we would pay way less for games because we would be strictly downloading them. And without a check in, microsoft isn’t confident in letting people be able to share games with their family sharing. Now I have to keep doing what I’m doing now as far as sharing games go. I think most console gamers need to pull their heads out of their asses and realize microsoft was trying to improve on steam like gaming. This is two steps back IMO. Now no one really has a reason to go from ps4 to xbone. Unless microsoft does a price drop, no one will really reverse their defection. I wish they would have stuck to their guns on this one.
But if you want Steam, why not just go PC? The reason most people choose to play on consoles is because they’re supposed to be simpler. No upgrades, no spec checking; if it says Xbox, it plays on Xbox. These people don’t understand the difference between digital files and disc media. They aren’t Steam users. The world is moving away from disc-based media, but as a company, Microsoft has to chase the lowest-denominator before they can appease the tech savvy.
Also, the 24 hour check in was entirely bullshit. If they wanted to make sure only one console was using a digital game, then they could have made it so that the games were locked to one console until Xbox Live login; giving you the option of deciding when that would happen.
